All Saints Southill Church & Byng Vault

Tuesday, 18 October 2016 - 2:00pm

There has been a church on the site since the early part of the 13th Century - the first Rector was appointed in 1225. Heavily restored in 1814, the bulk of the surviving medieval building dates to the 15th Century.

Meet at the church at 2.00pm for a tour of the church and part of the graveyard, and a talk on the people who have been associated with it over the centuries. We will also go in the Byng Vault, which is not normally open. It includes the remains of John Byng, Admiral of the Blue, who was shot on board his ship in 1757 in unusual circumstances. Dr Johnson said the Admiral ‘fell martyr to political persecution’ while Voltaire said the Admiral was shot ‘to encourage the others’.

Tea, coffee and cake will be for sale in the church after our tour.

Spaces are limited: book at Letchworth Tourist Information Office (33-35 Station Road, tel 01462 487868), saying whether you need a lift or can provide one. Cost: LALG members £2, non-members £3 (all to go to the Church).
