Community Flash Fiction Competition

You are invited to compete in the Letchworth Writers' Group Flash Fiction competition. Simply write 250 words about The Future of Letchworth. Three prizes, of £50, £30, and £20, plus commendations, will be awarded for the best entries at the Letchworth Festival Proms in the Park at 4 p.m. on Sunday 26th June.

Entries will only be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the 18th at the Flash Fiction Competition stall in front of The Arcade, Leys Avenue. Competition rules are given below.

This competition is free to enter. It is organised by the Letchworth Writers' Group, part of the LALG.

Competition Rules

  • The competition is promoted by the Letchworth Festival (the LF), and run and ministered by the Letchworth Writers' Group.
  • 250 words maximum, no minimum. The title is not included in the word count.
  • The competition is open to residents of Letchworth and surrounding area.
  • All entries are judged anonymously - do not include your name on the document.
  • A separate cover sheet must accompany each entry, with your name, title of the piece, age (if under 16), address, email address, phone number and word count. Please ensure that your contact details are correct.
  • If you are under the age of 16, you must obtain permission from your parent or guardian before entering.
  • The Letchworth Festival will not publish or provide your contact details to anyone and will use them only for the purpose of running this competition. The organisers may publish your name, age if under 16 and school/college name (if provided) alongside your entry, in the event it is displayed or published by the Festival or by any third party authorised by the LF.
  • All entries submitted are on the topic The Future of Letchworth.
  • Entries may be written in any style or form, prose or poetry. Funny or unexpected pieces greatly appreciated!
  • Writers may enter as many different entries as they like. Each entry must have a separate cover sheet, as above.
  • The competition opens at 10 a.m. on June 18th, 2016, and closes promptly at 2 p.m. NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
  • No discussion or argument will be entered into regarding the above.
  • The work must be your own. Any evidence to the contrary will result in immediate disqualification. Entrants confirm that they are the copyright owner of their entry/entries into the competition.
  • Entries must never have been published, self-published, published on any website, blog or online forum, broadcast nor have won or placed (as in 2nd, 3rd, runner up, etc.) in any other competition.
  • If written in longhand, entries MUST be legible to be considered.
  • Get someone else with neater handwriting to copy your work if need be.
  • Typed entries should be double-spaced.
  • Entries will not be returned.
  • Entries may not be amended, edited, added-to or otherwise changed once they are handed in.
  • Short-listed entries will be informed by Wednesday, June 22nd. All potential winners will be notified by that time. If you do not hear from us it means your entry has not been selected on this occasion.
  • Copyright of each entry remains with the author, but the winning entries will be read aloud at Proms in the Park at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 26th, and may be published in a local paper and/or on the LALG and Festival websites.
  • Short-listed entrants are encouraged to be present at the Proms in the Park event at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 26th. If unable to attend, winners will be notified by phone or email on Monday, June 27th.
  • Entries will be received and seen by members of the Letchworth Writers' Group. All entrant details will be removed and a reference number will be applied to each entry, before passing entries to the judges. Consequently, the competition is not open to persons involved in the organisation or running of the competition, or their immediate family.
  • The judges' decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. Judges are unable to comment on individual entries.
  • Winners will be selected from the entries received by the closing time, and will be contacted by the Letchworth Writers' Group directly.
  • The following prizes will be awarded: 1st place £50, 2nd place £30, 3rd place £20, plus individual commendations. All prizes will be awarded.
  • Prizes must be taken as offered. There are no substitutions or alternatives.
  • The Letchworth Festival reserves the right to cancel the competition, if deemed necessary, for any reason and at any time.
  • These Rules are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
  • Entrants must comply with these Rules to be eligible for any prizes offered. By entering the competition, entrants (and the parent/guardian giving entrants under 16 permission to enter) agree to comply with and be bound by these rules, and accept responsibility for any outcome arising from their failure to abide by them.
  • The Letchworth Festival reserves the right to amend the Rules at any time. Where such amendments take place during a competition that has opened for entries but has not been judged, all entrants to that competition will be notified that an amendment has been made and given the option to withdraw should they so wish. Competitions judged before amendments were made to these Rules shall be subject to the Rules that prevailed at the time of judging.
