Clours of the sky - Professor Davies will describe the elementary science explaining how rainbows are formed and will go on to explain haloes and glories.  Guided by the title of his talk he will explain why the sky is blue and what gives rise to a red sky at night.  Using ideas associated with the variable density of the atmosphere he will describe the mysterious green flash.  Finally he will explain how that well-known phenomenon called the glitter path is formed.  Throughout the talk there will be many pictures from which the various phenomena may be observed.
