Did you know that Lemsford, a village of 120 dwellings and 2 pubs, lies astride the old Great North road and at an important ford in Roman times?

A group of 22 of us went on this Sunday afternoon 2 mile walk round Potton. George Howe, chairman of the Local History Society was on hand to take us round. He proved to be an enthusiastic and entertaining guide with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Potton, its history, buildings and residents.

Our guide for this walk on Friday 15 July was Margaret Ashby, who is the author of several books on the history of Stevenage and Hertfordshire, and a lecturer on Local History for the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.
