London Villages

This group organises quarterly visits to sites which had their own identities and histories before they became part of the London conurbation. Outings are led either by a professional guide, or are researched and led by a member of the group. To date we have visited Hampstead Garden Suburb, Southwark and Walthamstow.

For latest details of our outings see the current Newsletter or click 'Full details' above to get in touch with our Group Contact, Simon.

Group reports

The group has now met quarterly for over three years, guided usually by Rosemary Read or myself. Now Peter Moore has volunteered to join us. Elated, we convened our biennial committee meeting and the three of us made some decisions.

We agreed the dates and guides for the four trips in 2010 and we thought about our costs. Researching routes usually includes visiting the target area at least twice beforehand. It’s a pleasure, but train fares alone do add up. We thought LALG members coming on trips might willingly contribute £2.00 each, and non-members £5.00 (as an incentive to join!). We’ll ask for opinions next time we meet.

Southwark Trips

Two trips to Southwark in June saw nearly 40 people enjoy lunch in the cafes and hostelries of Borough High St during a tour that took in the significant buildings, events, characters and social history of the area.
