Gardening: Tea and Tips

A group of enthusiasts viewing each others‘ gardens, then exchanging seeds, cuttings and gardening tips over light refreshments.

We have 33 members, the only criteria for membership being to have your own garden. We meet on Tuesday mornings, once a fortnight during the colder months, then every week from early Spring until the end of Autumn, and if lucky with the weather often sit in the garden to have our coffee, tea, biscuits and chat. Trips to large, public gardens are popular, but organising them less so. However, we usually have two or three outings during the summer, sometimes booking a coach and at other times sharing cars. It is a friendly, lively group, and members who grow plants from seeds, and who take cuttings, generously share them.

The sizes of our gardens vary greatly, and we are lucky that those with greater space are happy to host our lunch parties: we have one in the summer (often outside in the garden), and one at Christmas. We are a group of enthusiasts rather than experts, but there is usually someone who can answer the frequently asked question "does anyone know what that is?" even if the owner has no idea!

Group reports

We had a lovely sunny day for our fascinating outing to Butterfly World, near St Albans, in July.  There are 2 walks, a lake, more than a dozen intriguingly-designed small gardens, information of the planned Biome (for 2011), a good cafe, and a "tropical tunnel" with the means of identifying the myriads of large and colourful butterflies which flew around our heads.  We also made good use of the excellent plant sales!
