Quiz team goes from strength to strength

Update 28/07/19

We're pleased to report that in the last month or so we have returned to winning ways.

It started with a near miss, when the lack of an instant connection was the difference between a win and eventual 3rd place at the Cultivo. The clues were: Karma Chameleon, Message in a Bottle and Noodles. Further improvements came with a 1st & 2nd at the Three Horseshoes a week later. The biggest boost to the kitty came at our next visit to the Cultivo, we won by ½ a point to secure the £103 prize pot. Success continued this week at the Three Horseshoes when we tied for 1st place and gained another fiver for the funds.

Update 19/06/19

The first quiz of the period was at the British Schools Museum. Obscure knowledge about Britain’s first nudist beach learned while watching the World Snooker Championships got us one more point than we would otherwise have got but we still only managed a 4th place finish. A little rushed maybe, but an enjoyable evening none-the-less. The next one at the Cultivo, by all accounts was not so enjoyable. Then it was two visits in a fortnight to the 3 Horseshoes Norton. I think we spread ourselves a bit too thin at these and ended just out of the money on both occasions.

Update 15/05/19

We've conitnued quizzing over the winter picking up a number of wins. During the last few weeks we have had a couple of 2nd places at the 3 Horseshoes which earned us a few much-needed pounds for the kitty. In between these we had teams of 4 at the Millstream and the Cultivo but didn't threaten the leaders at either of them. Then last Sunday, 7 of us tackled the Balstock quiz at the George; this proved to be quite tricky! - for some at least. The max team size was 6 so Astrid was our mercenary for the evening. She chose wisely and joined 3 others to form what turned out to be the winning team, so well done to her.

Update 27/08/18

Here’s a quick look back at what has been quite a good few weeks for the Quiz Group. At the Cultivo on 30 July it started with a 2nd place, just a bit of Band Aid knowledge lacking there. From then on it was wins all the way. At the Three Horseshoes on 7 August we were 1st, tied 2nd and 3rd. On the 15th we adventured to the Engine in Baldock for the first time where Ken’s Girls, (Val, Ann M, Jane, Eileen, Sheila and Sheila’s daughter) collected the first prize. The venue was quite noisy, but the quizzing was good, so I think we’ll try it again at some stage. Most recently, at the Cultivo on the 20th, we scooped another first prize.

Update 23/07/18

A 5-man team adventured to Biggleswade on 20th June for the Carnival Quiz. The evening went at the pace of a carnival possession, but the questions were good and varied coming in groups of five, so if you didn’t like the subject it was soon on to the next one. We thought we were doing quite well until the final scores were read out, the winners got over 90% of the answers correct. We were 7th out of the 11 teams. The following week another team of 5 had a win at the 3 Horseshoes, and the week after that, the Biggleswade team reconvened at the Wagon and Horses to finish 2nd out of 6. On 9th July at the Cultivo we had probably our biggest ever win, adding £67 to the kitty for bettering the other 16 teams taking part, and last week in a low turnout at the 3 Horseshoes we came 1st and 2nd.

Update 26/03/18

Since the last update we have had: a 1st and 2nd at the Three Horseshoes, Norton on 13 March; a joint 4th out of 16 by the team of four who braved the snowy conditions at Weston on 17 March and another 4th at the Cultivo on the 19 March.

Update 13/03/18

It was a slightly less than auspicious debut at the Orange Tree, Baldock on 27 February where our lack of 'Brit Awards' knowledge left us filling the last 2 places. Better news came on 4 March when one of our teams claimed a first place at The Platform in Letchworth, this was repeated on the 10 March at the Children’s Society fundraiser.

Status at end of 2017

The Quiz Team is going from strength to strength. We now have over 30 members and can often field at least two teams at the quizzes we attend. We're also still winning some of the quizzes. Here are the winning team from the Three Horseshoes on 15 Aug

The following week we were able to field 3 teams at the Cultivo Lounge, our teams coming 2nd ,3rd and 7th. With one team nearly coming 1st place scoring 70 points was joint place  but after taking the tiebreaker question was pipped at the post. Here are our 3 teams from the night
