History of the Pathfinder Force

Monday, 3 October 2016 - 10:15am

This will be held at the Settlement, Nevells Road, Letchworth on Monday 3 October, 10.15am for a 10.30am start.

The first speaker will be David Ames from the Letchworth Heritage Foundation.  David will be talking and answering questions on the scheme of Management Consultation Exercise, on how we can do things better. Most property owners in Letchworth have restrictions on external alterations – cutting down trees to running a business from home. David will be available from 10.10am for anyone who would like to talk to him. His talk will begin at 10.30am.

The main speaker at 11.00am will be Sqn Ldr Kevin Dalley RAF (rtd) who will talk on the History of the Pathfinder Force 1942-1945.

The presentation begins by describing the RAF in 1939, personnel and aircraft, and the limited effectiveness of Bomber Command at the start of World War 2.  There is an explanation as to why we were not winning the war against Hitler's Germany including events which resulted in the formation of the Pathfinder Force, established at RAF

Wyton in August 1942. There are descriptions of the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster bombers: how the crews operated them, their experiences and techniques used to identify targets over Germany. Throughout the presentation are references to some notable war time personalities.
