RSPB Sandy - 49mi

Sunday 9th August

Brilliant day cycling, our longest ride this summer covering 49mi.

Starting in gorgeous sunshine we rode out from Letchworth to Baldock, Bygrave, Ashwell then on to Hinxworth and Edworth. From here we took the road up to Potton, cycled around Gamlingay through Everton and down to the RSPB centre at Sandy for our lunch stop, rarely timings work out just how you would like them but today was going exactly to plan.

From the RSPB we made the short trip into Sandy where we picked up cycle route 12 which winds through the center of Sandy and under the A1 - well done Bedfordshire. Route 12 merges with Route 51 which will take you on to Bedford and further, but we dropped off at Willington to visit the NT Dovecote and Stables. After a short while finding our way around Willington we reached the incredible 16th Century stone Dovecote but alas on the wrong Sunday of the month and it was closed.

Onward from Willington to Cople, Northill and a plan to stop at Old Warden, we met the most amazing site of a huge vintage and custom car rally at Shuttleworth, but stopped for tea at the very nice Hare and Hounds.

From here an easy ride to Clifton, Henlow, Arlesey and back to Letchworth through Fairfield Park.
