All Things Military

If you are interested in mankind's propensity to wage war from the ancient days of bronze weaponry to Unmanned Aerial Drones in warfare of today, join us on the third Thursday every month to hear talks and discussion of this  vast subject. All periods and aspects are included, recent talks have been  enjoyed on TE Lawrence, development of naval gunnery and life in a POW camp  in WWI.

Does "Wellfreighter" mean anything to you? If so, you may help us to tell the extraordinary story of a top-secret project in Letchworth to design and build very small submarines for SOE use during WW2. For years the engineers of Shelvoke & Drewry kept their secret safe, and it is sad that so few people today know of their success. There must be some old employees who knew the secret. If you can tell us how you were involved, or know someone we may contact, we can help promulgate their story.

You are very welcome to join our friendly, wide-ranging discussion of the talk and many other topics raised by members, often concerning artefacts they bring to our lively meeting at:

Three Horseshoes, Willian, where we gather at around 7.30 p.m. for the meeting to begin at 8.00 p.m. sharp.  See the Events panel to the right for particulars of this months meeting.

Group reports

In May, our record of excellent talks generating lively discussion was strongly reinforced by John Scully‟s revealing discourse on UK Defence in the Cold War.  The same is  true of Bryan Perkins‟ talk on Berlin in the Cold War, at a time when the defeated enemy laboured to rebuild their devastated capital city, suffering humiliating vivisection into sectors controlled by the victorious allies and the French.
